The Varnava Family

When the Varnava family of Ventura, CA needed strawberries to make their ‘Round the Bend strawberry and mixed berry jams, Terry Berries were the only choice considered.

“We love local strawberries, and the Terry Berry Chandler variety is by far our favorite. When Terry Berries had their annual jam berry sale last year and it coincided with the peak harvest of our best-ever backyard blackberry crop, we decided that it was time to make some jam” said Kathleen Varnava.

The family of four worked together to make several batches of both jam varieties, and after clean-up, they were ready to taste the results. “I put the strawberry jam and some peanut butter on toast, and was amazed at how the flavor just popped off the toast”, said Andrew Varnava. “I thought that we really made something special and decided to enter both varieties into the 2009 Ventura County Fair right then and there.”

The fair judges thought that the ‘Round the Bend jams were good enough to take home the blue ribbon for the mixed berry jam, and honorable mention in the popular strawberry category. 

“Quality ingredients are essential to obtaining a good result, and Terry Berry strawberries definitely fit the bill”, said Andrew Varnava.

High Schooler Sam Coultas won first prize for his artwork in the 2008 Ventury County Fair. His artwork was of the Terry Berries strawberry stand.
